A strong turnout of DataFlex developers and resellers enjoyed up to four days of presentations, training and a hugely fun surprise evening at this year's European DataFlex User Conference (see here for the conference site) in Malta, hosted by Cursor Ltd, the local Data Access Partner.
The primary presentation themes were Data Access's "Project Horizon" (see other news item) and the cutting-edge "AJAX" (Asynchronous Javascript And Xml - see here) technique for building highly interactive and responsive web sites, while another strong strand was on enhancing the look and feel of Windows applications using custom controls: the UK's Martin Pincot of Asckey Data Systems gave an excellent presentation on this topic.
One important announcement was that, with the release of Visual DataFlex 12 (what Project Horizon will first be released as), Data Access will be introducing a free version for non-commercial, private use.
The whole event was rounded off by the surprise evening which started with an immensely enjoyable and silly game played out on the streets of the medieval hill-top city of Mdina between competing teams of attendees from various geographic regions (you'll be pleased to know that the UK and Ireland team won, so the World Cup result no longer seems quite so important), followed by an excellent meal in a roof-top restaurant, then the making of a film re-enacting the Great Siege of Malta in 1565 (you can download the video from the EDUC site).
The next EDUC will be held in Moscow in May 2008 - see here for details.
