VDFQuery for the Web Presentation

  • by

Event: Scandinavian DataFlex Users Conference (ScanDUC)

Location: Lund, Sweden
Date: September 2013

Many of us have benefited from using Sture’s VDFQuery as a utility that we can build into our Windows applications to provide the user with ad-hoc reporting capabilities on the data in their systems, but now that we are increasingly migrating Windows applications to the web as a platform, what can we do to meet that need there?

The time has come for VDFQuery for the Web!

Why VDFQuery for the Web?

WebQuery began as a project to test what could be done using the new DataFlex WebApp Framework (WAF) but since then has rather assumed a life of its own.  It is an attempt to bring the capabilities of Sture Andersen’s VDFQuery Windows ad-hoc reporting tool to web applications.

While the project is still in its development stage, most aspects of it are already implemented and working.  Mike presented it at the Scanduc 2013 conference.  We expect that it will become available as a beta-test release within the next month or so.

VDFQuery in a nutshell

This presentation was predominantly performed on live data, with very little written down.

Here are some screenshots that demonstrate how easy it is to generate a report from your customer data using VDF Query.

You select a main table and are then able to select columns from that table and all the tables to which it relates. You can also add calculated columns as expressions.

WebQuery Example 1

You can add selection criteria (filters) on any of the available columns and also a selection expression.

WebQuery Example 2

You can output to a window within the application (modal popup) a new browser tab, or a new browser window.

WebQuery Example 3

Customise the output of your report by choosing the text colour, background colour and highlight colour.

WebQuery Example 4

Run your report…

WebQuery Example 5

Queries can be saved as public or if you are logged in, as private to that user.
