Visual DataFlex 2010/16.0 Released

  • by

August 2010: Data Access Worldwide has announced Visual DataFlex 2010/16.0 is released, providing an extensive list of new features and enhancements for developers of Windows® and Web applications.

What are the Benefits of this Release?

The primary focus of this release has been the introduction of the new grid system, to improve both the appearance and performance of Windows® applications, while at the same time providing developers an easier to use, more intuitive environment in which to design their applications.

Incorporating the AJAX Library 2.2, the latest Codejock Xtreme ReportControl™ and other Studio improvements, such as the Code Complete feature, this release provides developers with the leading edge tools they require to deliver reliable, robust applications in an increasingly competitive market.

Visual DataFlex 2010/16.0 is considered a major upgrade from all previous releases, therefore we will be sending new codes, via a separate email, to those of you who have a current Visual DataFlex subscription.

Deliver Improved Applications Using the New Grid System

The new grid controls not only provide developers with greater control over the appearance and behaviour of applications, but also ensure that the applications they produce using Visual DataFlex resemble Windows® standards more closely.

To help you get up and running with the new grid system in this release, some samples have been provided for you, which are available from the Visual Studio Start Center. There are examples of both simple and data aware grids (these grid types are nicely demonstrated in John Tuohy’s Grid Orientation webinars). As you explore the samples, you will find out how to create and modify grids, how to load data into grids and how that data is processed.

Develop Enhanced Web Applications with the New AJAX Library 2.2

The Visual DataFlex AJAX Library 2.2 is designed to work with Visual DataFlex 2010/16.0, and enables developers to develop better looking and more functionally rich web applications than previous releases allowed. It includes both the foundation for building AJAX (or Web 2.0 applications), and a sample application to which developers can refer for examples.

Benefits of using the new Ajax Library include:

  • better looking applications resulting from updated themes which have new icons, buttons and other small improvements
  • improvements to expressions, with the AJAX Library now supporting binding a field to an expression
  • a fast new API for making VdfCall’s to the server within a single line of code
  • improvements to calls to the server with data bound server calls
  • an easier way to load Data Dictionary labels onto the page, using runtime labels
  • better support for complex DDO structures and constraints
  • enhancements to error tracing with a new details section that can show additional information about errors

Faster Development Times with Code Complete

To help you code your designs more quickly, Visual DataFlex 2010/16.0 provides a way of automatically populating a selected item. Simply press Ctrl +Space, while the Code Complete list is displayed, to complete as much as possible of the item with regard to other potential matches, without closing the list. A major benefit of this feature is that it allows you to partially auto-complete an item and then continue typing more characters to identify your exact selection.
