DataFlex Windows/Web upgrade discount

  • by

Yes, that’s correct, existing DataFlex Windows users can upgrade to DataFlex Windows/Web Combo licences – for a fraction of the list price – just 25%.

Why upgrade to DataFlex Windows/Web Combo?

The DataFlex Windows/Web Combo is a very cheap way of getting started with migrating applications to the Web. For anyone who has purchased DataFlex Windows licences prior to September 2013 and who now requires Web licences, this is the most cost effective way of purchasing additional named users for Web applications.

Using the Windows/Web Combo licence, upgrading an existing Windows Client Licence changes the existing concurrent users to named users, for both Windows and Web.

The advantage of the Windows/Web Combo licence is that all of those named users are licensed for both Windows and Web use, so if you have, say, a 10 user Windows Client licence with database connectivity (price £900) at present (first bought before September 2013), you could upgrade that to a Windows/Web Combo licence (for a price of £225) and have 10 named users on Windows and also have the same 10 named users for a Web Application Client licence. Each of the 10 users can use both Windows and Web applications.

Upgrading to the Combo licence would only be a problem if you had users who were never using the system at the same time: if Janet and John were never logged in at the same time they would only count as one concurrent user, but would count as two named users, possibly requiring an increase in user-count.

We think that for most situations this makes the Windows/Web Combo licence an even better deal.

How much cheaper is a DataFlex Windows/Web licence?

The potential savings depend on how many user counts you require. Here are two examples to compare the prices of purchasing separate Web named user licences with upgrading to a Windows/Web Combo licence.

Example 1 – Separate Dataflex Windows and Web licences

Company A started with a DataFlex Windows Client Licence bought prior to September 2013 for 10 users (with connectivity). This licence allows 10 concurrent users access to Windows applications, but none of the user counts may be used for the Web. Company A uses only 7 of their concurrent users, leaving 3 unused.

Company A has decided they want to start migrating their application to the Web, so buy a Web App licence for 10 named users (in addition to their existing Windows Client Licence) to allow the existing 7 users access to their Web applications.

Total cost: £900

Example 2 – Upgrading using Dataflex Windows/Web Combo

Company B also started with a DataFlex Windows Client Licence bought prior to September 2013 for 10 users (with connectivity). Company B also use only 7 of their concurrent users, leaving 3 unused.

Company B has decided they want to start migrating their application to the Web, so buy an upgrade for their existing Windows licence to a Windows/Web Combo, the list price of which is £1,125, but which through the upgrade discount they get for just 25% of that.

Total cost: £281.25

Now, company B have 10 named Windows users and the same 10 users as named Web users. As they migrate their applications to the web they can continue to use their Windows licences while gradually taking up use of their Web licences.
